The arches that greeted visitors to Fort Myers Beach for more than a half-century, only to be torn down 40 years ago, apparently won’t be coming back, but their place in local history could be honored with a scaled-down monument.
At the request of Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass on Tuesday, the county staff will look at the possibility of creating a smaller monument to recognize the towering arches of old. Town officials have been reluctant to designate a spot on which to replicate the old arches.
“Since there is really no organized effort to find a location, I’m not talking a new full-scale monument,” Pendergrass said. “This is a small-scale monument recognizing the arches with material that was left over.”
A smaller monument may be more acceptable to beach leaders who balked at a large scale replica this week.
